Platte Christian Reformed Church
History
|
 |
 | It was in 1883 that a small group of people from the
Netherlands organized a Christian Reformed congregation in what was then Edgerton in
Dakota Territory near what is today Platte, South Dakota. This congregation was known as
the Overysel Christian Reformed Church because its members originated from the Overysel
Province of the Netherlands. Many calls were sent out to get a minister from 1883 to 1900
but all declined. In 1900 the railroad came to Platte and in the same year the Overysel
congregation decided to move their church building to Platte thus changing its name to
Platte Christian Reformed Church. In May 1921 the Friesland congregation southwest
of Platte also joined the Platte Christian Reformed congregation. The congregation then
numbered 112 families. We have had sixteen ministers serve our congregation from 1901 to
date. In 1948 the four congregations of Corsica, Harrison, New Holland and Platte started a mission project in
Lake Andes, South Dakota. It was to provide a place of worship for employees at the Fort
Randall Dam.
|
 | In 1958 mission work was started in Rapid City, South
Dakota by the same four congregations. The results of this mission work was that in 1975
the Rapid City Christian Reformed Church was organized. In 1967 a Wayside Chapel was built
and placed on Highway 44 near the Platte/Winner bridge by the Mission Society. The school
society consisting of members of the Platte congregation operated a Christian School in
Platte from 1917 to 1929 when it was closed. A new society was was formed in 1937 but not
until 1951 was a new school built and opened which is now the Platte Christian School. In
1956 Dakota
Christian High School opened its doors
where many of our young people receive their high school education. This school is
supported by the congregations of Corsica, Harrison, New Holland, and Platte.

 | Our new church building was built in 1996 with a great
amount of labor volunteered and money donated.

Recent interesting and challenging events in the life of our church
 | The beginning and growing of the Bible Study Coffee Break. Our church has been
long regarded as the "Dutch" church and many people of the community never felt
comfortable in our church. Now we have almost 100 women of the community involved in this
Bible Study which meets in our church weekly. Ladies come from all denominations and
some from no denomination. Our church is able to reach out because of our facilities,
location and dedicated leaders.
|
 | We now have a secretary on
staff to work with the pastor and the congregation.
|
 | We were privileged to have our
former pastor, Dr. Warren H. Lammers go to the Ukraine to teach pastors there for 8 weeks.
|
 | A large percentage of our men
have attended Promise Keepers.
